November 2012 Tip of the Month for Those Taking the ABOG Maintenance of Certification

Fourth quarter is here, so finally a break from all that journal reading. However remember you must have enrolled in at least one practice module each year. If not, that too is grounds to yank your certification, which means you get to start the whole process over again…yep, starting with the primary written then oral exam. Trust me, you do NOT want to go there ever again.

Hey you lucky ones who were the first to enter the MOC cycle in 2008, your luck is just never ending. Congratulations, you get to be the first ones to also take the written recertification exam in 2013! Man, are you lucky! Well, in all seriousness, fortunately (notice I didn’t say luckily) there is a practice written exam of 33 questions on your ABOG home page. They really are easy, but in my opinion, poorly constructed. Let’s hope the real exam is better written.

More to come, but soon you should receive a link to register for the computerized test at a Pearson-Vue testing center. You can take the test anytime between January 1 to December 15, 2013. You can take the exam up to five times. We suggest you wait until the Spring to let them work the bugs out. Better yet, come to our April 17-21 review course for a fantastic review and then take the exam shortly thereafter.

ABOG claims the basis for the written exam is the Compendium. Have you noticed that a quarter of our MOC articles are Compendium articles? So duh, guess what’s important? We have an Annual MOC Manual for each year that compiles a narrative summary of each article plus written test questions. I did mention that you have to take a written exam, right?

How to Pass the ABOC MOC exam

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

ABOG extended the article deadline this year from September 15 to December 15. Don’t wait until the end! Remember that you must also have enrolled in at least one practice module each year. If you have not, that can also be grounds to yank your certification – YIKES! If they do, then you get to start the whole cycle over. That means you get to take your primary written, then your oral exam…surely it’s double the pleasure the second time around? NOT!

Looking down the pipe, did you know you have to take a written exam on the sixth year of your cycle? I know you thought you were done with those forever. You can take the exam on your fifth year in case you’re a little rusty. Since the MOC cycle started in 2008, the first exam will be offered in 2013; however, a practice exam will be available in 2012.

We’re already revving up. We have a MOC Manual for each year that compiles a narrative summary of each article plus written test questions. I did mention that you have to take a written exam, right? You can order these as you go or collectively the year you are preparing for your exam.

ABC leads the way again and will debut a one day workshop reviewing the high yield Compendium articles. Don’t you love being in the inaugural class? Let’s just hope they have mercy for you poor guinea pigs!

August 2012 Tip of the Month for Those Taking the ABOG Maintenance of Certification

The third quarter articles just came out. Have you let some of the second and first quarter articles collect dust? Have you even done any? This year they extended the deadline to complete ALL the articles from Sep to Dec 31. For those of you who were frantically burning the midnight oil to meet the deadline last year, view this new deadline as a gift and lesson learned to not procrastinate this year.

Furthermore, don’t forget you must have enrolled in at least one practice module each year. If you have not, then this can also be grounds to yank your certification — YIKES!

Looking down the pipe, did you know you have to take a written exam on the sixth year of your cycle? I know, you thought you were done with those forever. You can take the exam on your fifth year in case you’re a little rusty. Since the MOC cycle started in 2008, the first exam will be offered in 2013. ABOG will be offering a practice exam online; however, they have pushed their initial June launch date to September.

ABOG keeps changing their story re: the content for the written exam. Currently they state it will be based on the Compendium. We plan to have a fall MOC Webinar covering high yield Compendium articles. If the exam is anything like the past written recertification exams, we think it will be easy. ABOG has made it clear, they want you to pass. They did not go down without a fight and we were actually the last specialty that reluctantly acquiesced to the American Board of Medicine’s mandate for a written exam component for recertification.

Tip of the Month for Those Taking the ABOG Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part II

Monday, June 18th, 2012

You should be half way through your 2nd quarter articles now. Of course you can extend or drag out all the articles all the way up until the December 30 deadline, but WHY?

For those of you in your third year, you should have started the Safety Course. You cannot enter it until you have completed 60 questions from the 1st or 2nd quarter articles. The Safety Course is accessed only on-line, so if you’re one who likes to print out the articles and questions, you’re out of luck.

ABC has a Comprehensive MOC Manual that summarizes past articles and especially those questions that overlap. We think it will be easy to predict the written exam focus later.

Representatives from ABOG have announced verbally the last two years at APGO/CREOG conference that there will be a practice written exam on-line starting this month. We haven’t seen anything on the website yet, but keep an eye out. This will be especially helpful for those of you who are in the first batch scheduled to take your written exam in 2013.

Of course you can extend or drag out those first quarter articles all the way up until the December deadline, but WHY? You need to finish up those first quarter articles and start working on the 2nd quarter ones.

January 2012 Tip of the Month for Those Taking the ABOG Maintenance of Certification

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Time to pay to play. Your renewal fee of $245 for Part II or Annual Board Certification is due February 25, 2012. Access to the MOC assignments will not be allowed until your application and fee are received. The list of journal articles for the first quarter should be out mid-January. Make a New Year’s resolution to finish the first quarter just before you file your taxes in April.

Did you pick up that already they’ve changed the rules? For Part 4 MOC, this year they eased up on the number of modules, as a matter of fact, they dropped them in half! Now you only need to complete five modules per 6 year cycle, rather than ten. For you proactive guys, if you’ve already finished five, then you’re done…Yahoo! If you have not, then new also is that one module must be opened each of the first five years of a cycle.

Welcome and congratulations to those who just passed their November and December primary oral exam. Thought you could finally rest? Well think again!! New diplomats must enter and start the MOC process by January 2012.

For MOC Years 1,2, and 4, if you want to bump up credit for 35 rather than 25 category I CME credit hours, you need to answer all 180 questions, instead of the minimum of 120 questions. Additionally you will need to pay an additional fee of $50. Yup, for just fifty bucks you get an additional 10 category I CME credit hours. That’s a DEAL!

2012 will be the first year that ABOG debut’s the written MOC exam. This applies to you lucky ones who were the first to enter the MOC cycle in 2008. Now if you do your math, you will say, “Hey, I’m not supposed to be tortured until the 6th year or 2014”. If you read closely, you can take the exam one year before, or 2013. ABOG plans to then provide 2012 as a “trial” run. It’s not clear if this is eligible for anyone who wants a sneak preview or only those lucky initial ones. Stay posted, but we recommend you give it a whirl for kicks and the inside scoop.

ABC will be debuting a one day MOC Written Exam Workshop in the spring. We will cover high yield Compendium articles and associated written questions.

With you every step…
